SEBASTIAN
Palazzo Malipiero, Venice, Italy
Curated by: Klaus Biesenbach and Lisa Bott
On the occasion of: The 60th Biennale Arte
The performance featured the artist standing on a slowly rotating platform, pierced by arrows and surrounded by robotic cameras engineered by AATB, which continuously captured his body in video and 3D scans. Over eight hours, sugar syrup dripped from the ceiling, gradually dissolving makeup and restricting movement — a living tableau of endurance, ritual, and transformation.
Presented by the Neue Nationalgalerie and Museum Berggruen in partnership with Gallerie dell’Accademia, and produced with the support of Villa Eugénie and Botanical Agency, Sebastian combined performance, robotics, and meticulous logistical orchestration to create a haunting meditation on embodiment and technology.
As the Producer for this complex, large-scale installation and performance, I was responsible for the end-to-end project management and operational execution. My role encompassed the complete logistical orchestration of the robotic scenography and technical integration, requiring meticulous planning and budget management.
I led the onsite coordination between the artistic team, the institutions, and Studio AATB, ensuring the precise and safe implementation of the robotic camera systems and the rotating platform. This involved advanced problem-solving to synchronize the mechanical choreography with the artist's durational endurance, all within the demanding context of a major museum presentation. My oversight guaranteed that the fusion of human performance and technology was realized flawlessly, supporting the creation of a haunting and technologically sophisticated meditation on embodiment.
