Housesitter is a 1992 romantic comedy that I was particularly attached to as a child, and from which the show borrows its title. I won’t go too far in describing the premise. Rather, I’ll allow Letterboxd user ‘Jade talks too much ’ to succinctly sum it up with their four and half star review as ‘Wacky 90’s romcom starring Steve Martin as a Sadsack Architect & Goldie Hawn as a deeply unhinged con artist .’ Using the film is admittedly not a grand concept, or arguably one at all, but Steve Martin had left some kind of profound effect on me, so there you have it. I once waited on him as he ate a chilled soup served in a little pumpkin on a bed of ice, but I digress.

I did think about housesitting though, and I suppose what one can mine there is an idea of trust. The other day, my neighbour’s housesitter lost their cat, so it’s not without its risks - you could be inviting a chaos agent into your private space. But ultimately you hope for the best, rarely expectthe worse and await to return to a home standing (and pets intact). How this relates to an exhibition tucked away a street off Langstrasse is a legitimate question, and for one a polished answer may require contorting into a word pretzel. So I won’t attempt that route, as I’m not that nimble. Instead, I’ll be provide an earnest response. We have been entrusted with someone’s home, with the hope a dancing cross won’t blow off their balcony. We have received works through the generosity of friends’ carry-on luggage allowances and the post (a system, in itself, that requires faith). And most of all, we have had the fortune that the artists were graciously in on this with us- all for the purpose of doing a small show that really, really at the crux of it is about the spirit of fun. I wasn’t lying that it was a bit of a stretch to relate it to the movie, but incidentally - the film happens to be fun too.
